Eight Florida fighters are scheduled to appear on Friday’s eight-fight card, highlighting by the start of a four-man tournament to determine who will fight for the vacant CES MMA Bantamweight World Title in 2021.
One title eliminator is an intrastate showdown between Orlando bantamweight Diego Silva (12- 5, 2 KOs) and Coconut Creek veteran Andrew Whitney (18-6, 7 KOs), both making their CES MMA debut. In the other title eliminator, Dinis Paiva (13-8, 7 KOs) of East Providence, RI, a 20-time CES MMA veteran and former bantamweight title contender, faces off against Pensacola native Josh Smith (9-6, 5 KOs).
Also fighting out of Florida this Friday, Pensacola’s Dahlen Wilson (4-3, 2 KOs) battles Gary Balletto III (5-2, 2 KOs) of Rhode Island, the son of iconic pro boxer and former The Contender reality television star Gary “Tiger” Balletto, in a three-round welterweight bout. Middleweight submission specialist Adriano Capitulino (7-4) battles Long Island’s Hugh McKenna (3-4), a three-time CES MMA veteran, and bantamweight Joe Penafil(5-2) of Orlando faces North Carolina’s Da’mon Blackshear (8-4, 1 KO). Also highlighting the main card is the second of two all-Florida showdowns between bantamweights Carlos Espinosa (5-4, 3 KOs) of Tampa and Coconut Creek veteran Leo Carvalho (3-4).
The bantamweight title eliminator is a potential life-changing opportunity for the fighters involved; all three fighters who’ve won the title since its inception in 2016 – Andre Soukhamthath, Andre Ewell, and Tony Gravely – have gone on to compete for the UFC.
